Frequently Asked Questions
Which genes are tested?
DNAlysis focuses on small genetic variations or single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP’s) as opposed to genetic mutations (such as the BRCA 1 and BRCA 2 genetic mutations which usually result in a definite outcome). SNP’s are common genetic variations between individuals.
The emphasis of our tests focuses on the relationship between genotype* and environment (endogenous or exogenous) and the resultant or possible phenotype**.
*Genotype:
An individual’s collection of genes which includes genetic variations affecting metabolic pathways.
**Phenotype:
The set of observable characteristics of an individual resulting from the interaction of its genotype with the environment.
The Single Nucleotide Polymorphism (SNP) inclusion criteria for all the DNA testing are as follows:
Where there is significant evidence linking the gene to a phenotypic outcome.
Where the SNP within the gene exerts direct influence over specific biochemical processes that create known symptoms or disease.
Where the effect of the SNP is modifiable by environmental factors such as diet, nutrients, exercise or lifestyle.
Where the SNP is relatively common and relevant to the population.
Where the impact of the SNP and clinical interventions are measurable.
Potential negative effects of specific nutrient intake with certain genetic variants.
How long does it take to receive test results back from the Laboratories?
It takes two weeks for us to receive the results from the DNAlysis laboratories. Thereafter, we arrange a feedback session with you.
Do I need to fast before the blood spot test is taken?
No. Your genes do not change in your lifetime or in response to eating or drinking.
Do I have to always take a DNA Health test before any of the others?
Whilst we advise clients to take the DNA Health test first because of the broad foundational information it provides about your genetic disposition, you do not have to take the DNA Health test first if it is very specific information you are after.
Is DNAlysis an accredited laboratory?
Yes, DNAlysis is a SANAS and ISO accredited laboratory.
Do I need to provide a blood spot sample for every DNA test I take?
No, we only need one blood spot sample, even if you take tests months or years apart.
